BMWs and Minis all have their service records recorded electronically, rendering the paper service book obsolete. This was phased in from around 2013 depending on model. All models from 2015 will have the electronic service history.
We here at BM Automotive Solutions are registered partners of BMW, we have a fully paid account with BMW as well as the genuine BMW Key reader device and the diagnostic interface and software. This is linked to BMW where upon service the entry is recorded and electronically stamped.
Key Reader
This device sits on the service desk and upon placing the key the data from the vehicle is read out, this includes information such as, make, model, vin number, mileage and of course service requirements.
Using this device whilst logged in with BMW enables us to update the transfer history with BMW, any BMW dealer would now see your vehicle has been serviced and what has been done.
Once the vehicle is driven for several miles the key automatically updates in line with the service requirements
BMW ICOM and ISTA The ICOM and ISTA are the diagnostic interface and software required to update the vehicles I-Drive legitimately. Once updated this will show in a list under “Service History” in the menu found under vehicle information.
We would advise if possible to get the service next due carried out before the miles remaining reach zero, or the date passes. Any overdue service will now permanently log both with BMW online and also on the vehicles on board computer, some vehicles will show an exclamation mark next to the service, and some vehicles with show the amount of miles it went over. This could become a problem when selling the car or in the event of a warranty claim.
We are aware of garages either not updating the systems as they do not have the correct equipment or they are using non-approved methods of updating the on board systems, be aware that by doing this you could invalidate any BMW warranty and it could affect any BMW good will claims made outside of the vehicles 3 year manufacturer’s warranty.
Please also be aware we can not add an entry if another garage has done the service, as it is an automated system our details are automatically electronically stamped when we do the service ( We wouldn’t put our stamp in a service book if another garage had done the work! )
